Madagascar is a country about the size of France, situated in the Indian Ocean, off the coast of Mozambique on the African continent. It is one of the World’s poorest countries with over 90% of the population earning less than US$2 per day (World Bank Report, June 2013).
Marie and Bernard Neary, from Cabra West, Dublin 7, first visited Madagascar in 2005 with the house-building charity Habitat for Humanity. They have been to Madagascar seven times since then, and in the past four years have spent three months each year, entirely at their own expense, volunteering in Children’s Homes and partnering with local NGOs in the area of education and the alleviation of poverty.
